Bieberstein Castle (Hofbieber)

The origins of the complex date back to the 9th century when the area around Hofbieber belonged to Fulda Abbey. A castle, Bieberstein, was built between 1150 and 1165 under Abbot Markward to protect the abbey's interests. In the 13th century, the castle fell into disrepair but was restored around 1250 under Abbot Heinrich IV and surrounded by a moat. The castle frequently changed hands due to the abbey's financial difficulties, though a right of repurchase was always secured. From 1486 to 1802, it was continuously owned by the Prince-Abbots of Fulda and served as the seat of a high administrative office.
