Sulzheim Castle

The origin of Sulzheim Castle was formed by a castle-like estate, which was owned by the Würzburg Cathedral Chapter. In 1134, the village of Sulzheim, along with eleven other villages, was given as a gift to the newly founded Ebrach Abbey.

Under Abbot Wilhelm Söllner, it was decided to demolish the estate, which had become dilapidated. Around 1700, the tithe barn was built by the first castle architect Johann Dientzenhofer. In 1728, Sulzheim Castle was completed as a three-winged complex with a central pavilion. The very important architects Balthasar Neumann and Joseph Greising were most likely involved in its 12-year construction period.

In 1802, the castle became the property of the Kingdom of Bavaria as part of the secularization. However, it, along with its surrounding lands, passed to the princely house of Thurn und Taxis as early as 1824. It remained there for about 160 years and experienced a very eventful history and use during this time. In the 1970s, the castle was finally sold by the princely house and has been in private ownership ever since.
