U-Boot-Reparaturwerft Brest

Following the occupation of the French Atlantic coast by German troops in June 1940, the port of Brest, after sunken ships were salvaged and war damage cleared, was taken over by the Kriegsmarine. From October 1940, it served as a military base. Construction of the U-boat bunker began in early 1941, carried out by the Organisation Todt and controlled by the Waffen-SS. Planning and construction management were in the hands of Julius Berger, Campenon Bernhard, and Anton Kopp. The bunker included ten dry docks for single U-boats and five wet pens for up to three U-boats. With a width of 330 meters, a length of 190 meters, and a height of 17 meters, and ceiling thicknesses of up to 6 meters, it was an imposing construction. The Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven supplied materials and skilled personnel for repairs, with French personnel also employed. From 1943, the Deschimag group, particularly AG Weser, took over the technical support for U-boat repairs, sending around 1000 employees. Primarily, Type VII C and VII D U-boats of the 1st and 9th U-boat Flotillas were stationed here. Following the Allied landing in Normandy in June 1944 and the siege of Brest, the base capitulated on September 18, 1944. Demolition of the massive bunker was not possible due to its construction.

The U-boat repair yard is located in Brest, in the Finistère department of the Brittany region, France, at an elevation of approximately 28 meters above sea level.

The bunker is still used by the French Navy today and is not accessible to visitors.
